PhD Nerds – Grand Realizations

On March 3, 2011, in Comics, irregular, PhD nerds, by Amiya
Optimization is integral to almost every field of Engineering. As a Grad student undertaking classes in convex optimization I went through a phenomena that I guess every engineer will go through sometime in his life. A grand realization; that everything is optimization...which will be followed by another realization that almost none of them can be actually solved!!

The sooner realization 2 happens the better it is for you...

The phenomenon is actually mentioned quite early by Stephen Boyd in his online lectures hosted by Stanford. Boyd whose book on convex optimization can be treated as the most complete and in-depth book in the field. Coupled with the free online video lectures, notes and presentations its all you need to have a clear understanding of optimization and its applications.

BTW: Convex optimization is a very small set of optimization problems that can actually be solved. For the rest one has to be content with local solutions.
