Chingay Parade - Dancing to the music

The Chingay Parade is an annual street parade held Singapore as part of Chinese New Year festivities. The term Chingay itself originated in Southeast Asia, particularly in Penang, which is a phonetic equivalent of some Chinese words, which means "a decorated miniature stage" or float. Held on the Formula One Marina Bay street Circuit Road, It was open with a Fire Party, and included the largest moving multi-ethnic performances, first travelling dance competition within the parade, a spectacular finale where thousands of performers flooded the parade ground holding candle lights and an inaugural colorful Arts Carnival.

I went there with three of my friends loaded with my Canon 1000D. Given the fast moving crowd and limited light it was certainly difficult to capture. Moreover this was the first time I was encountering such situation. Even highest ISO setting of 1600 and highest possible aperture on my 18-55 Kit lens the best I could get was a 1/60th shutter. My supposedly large memory card of 2GB ran out faster than I imagined (my camera can take 3.5 pictures each second).

Coming back and looking at the photos - I would say I did a decent job. The event was colorful and cheerful. Looking at the young as well as old people all dressed up and dancing to the music made me forget about the world and enjoy the event to the fullest. Its a must visit event and brings closer people from all over the country and across a broad range of cultures and traditions.

Here is a video made out of selected photos that captures the whole event. Watch it in full HD if you have enough bandwidth.

Some collage made out of the photos that can be used as wallpapers. Resolution is 1600X1000 HD and will look good even in large size displays.

Here are the rest of the photos. I had to add only a few of my whole collection as I captured nearly 500 images most of which are redundant and may not be so fun to watch.

Contact me if you need a high resolution version of any one of them. And in case you missed the parade this time make sure you don't miss it next year.
